Sulphur Fertilizers in India

India, the second largest consumer and producer of fertilizers in the world, represents a huge market potential for sulphur fertilizers as highlighted at the recent "TSI-FAI-IFA Symposium on Sulphur in Balanced Fertilisation" in New Delhi.

The Government of India Secretary of Fertilizers, Dr. J.S. Sarma, stressed the need for India to focus on sulphur deficiency as a major nutrient limiting Indian food production to an audience of industry and government policymakers. Presentations were delivered by TSI and FAI on the current status, challenges, and future action required in India to address and satisfy sulphur fertilizer requirements in the context of balanced fertilization.

The Symposium follows the conclusion of an extensive Indian-wide study TSI conducted with the Fertiliser Association of India (FAI) and with the support of the International Fertiliser Association (IFA) to delineate the scope and extent of sulphur crop requirements in the country and promote the need for sulphur to all stakeholders (farmers, industry, and government policy makers.) Study results confirmed that Sulphur deficiences nation-wide in India are dramatic, and the Sulphur requirements are enormous:
  • More than 75% of agricultural land is deficient or likely deficient.
  • Almost all trials responded to sulphur fertilizer with crop yield increases from 14 percent to 60 percent.
  • Optimum sulphur fertilizer dose varied between 30 and 45 kg/ha.
  • Economic returns from sulphur fertilizer use were very attractive.
