CropLife 100 and Consolidation: 12 Biggest Ag Retail Deals in the Last 5 Years

No other factor impacts our CropLife 100 list of the largest U.S. ag retailers quite like consolidation. Whether it’s mega mergers such as three cooperatives joining forces to create one top seven agronomy business, or a major acquisition like the perennial number one retailer purchasing the 42nd biggest retailer in the country, consolidation is a constant force that influences the rankings each year.

And just three months into 2021, we’ve already have witnessed two major moves. In early March we saw the merger of two Wisconsin-based cooperatives, Landmark Services Cooperative (No. 39) and Countryside Cooperative. The two chose each other as merger partners because “they share many similarities and merging into a single cooperative was a natural fit,” according to a press release.

In February, another merger was finalized between Indiana-based ag cooperatives Co-Alliance, LLP (No. 16) and Harvest Land Cooperative (No. 46). “This merger will offer exceptional opportunities to our farmer-owners in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois,” said Scott Logue, CEO of Harvest Land. “The expanded resources, more robust product line, and extension of quality service will extend beyond what the two co-ops could offer individually. Together, we anticipate great success in cultivating opportunities for our members through this historic merger with the Co-Alliance team.”

So why are ag cooperatives feeling the urge to merge? “Many farmers are under financial distress,” said CoBank in a report. “Depressed incomes and tight margins can affect cooperative viability and make a merger look more attractive. Many recent consolidations represent mergers of equally strong organizations.”

But CropLife 100 cooperatives haven’t been alone in the consolidation craze. Independent dealerships have also been a part of some of the largest mergers and acquisitions in the industry. In the slideshow, you’ll find what we consider to be the 12 largest deals that have most impacted the CropLife 100 since 2016.
